Being an only child
Robert was an only child, which he had mixed feelings about. The company of a sibling seemed appealing to him, but he also loved the attention and freedom of 100% choice in his activities as a child.

Robert was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 11th, 1933. His parents, Charles D. Fagles and Vera Voynow Fagles, only had one child, so he had no other siblings. Robert’s ancestors originated from Russia/Poland. His mother's family came to the US at the end of the 19th century and they were all of the Jewish faith. There was a great swarm of people from Eastern-European countries who came to the US at that time. When Robert was younger, he was involved in Baseball and Tennis which he was very interested in. However, nothing interested him more then knowledge. As a child, Robert read for hours and hours, almost as if trying to soak up all the information in the world. He eventually progressed from reading to writing in his adulthood, and his work was his second true love. Robert met his future wife, Marilyn, when he was 15 and she was 14. They were both born in the same city and they grew up together. One could say their love story was just like many in Robert's Greek translations; destined to be.
