Robert Fagles

Robert Fagles. A writer. A teacher. A translator. A father. A husband. And an inspiration to all. Born with a love of Ancient Greek and literature, Robert translated many of the Greek classics. His three most famous translations; The Odyssey, The Iliad, and the Aeneid may be found in almost any bookstore across the US, and are used in many high schooler's education today. Robert's countless years of teaching and research at Princeton University and awards for his translations are just a part of his very interesting but tragic life. In 2004, Robert was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Sadly, he passed away a few years later, but he is continuously recognized and praised for his work even after death. Join me and learn more about this unique and special man's life. I sincerely think that you will not regret it.

Welcome!

Hello, my name is Tessa Hartley. I am 13 years old and currently in 8th grade at Holbrook Middle School, Holden Maine. This website is the product of a project I was assigned in my honors ELA class. Our task was to create a twenty page (minimum) website/documentary on a relative of ours or our family name. I chose my grandfather, Robert Fagles, because he was a famous translator and he taught at Princeton University. Sadly, he died when I was only three years old, but from what I remember, he was a brilliant and cunning man. It has been wonderful having this opportunity to learn more about him, and I sincerely hope you enjoy learning about him too!

Thank you to my parents for helping with time management and setting up interviews, my Grandmother for answering my long list of questions about Robert, my teacher Mrs.Morgan for giving us the necessary tools and skills to create the website, and my classmates for helping me with issues I had with the website. I couldn't have done this without you guys!

QUOTES:

-The Iliad, Robert Fagles

“And Apollo lord of the silver bow and Queen Athena,
for all the world like carrion birds, like vultures,
slowly settled atop the broad towering oak.”

-Robert Fagles

“The catastrophe of the tragic hero thus becomes the catastrophe of the fifth-century man; all his furious energy and intellectual daring drive him on to this terrible discovery of his fundamental ignorance - he is not the measure of all things but the thing measured and found wanting.”

-Sophocles, (translation) Robert Fagles

“Money - you demolish cities, root men from their homes, you train and twist good minds and set them on to the most atrocious schemes. No limit, you make them adept at every kind of outrage, every godless crime - money”
